BBC match of the day Pundit and former Newcastle star, Alan Shearer has backed Chelsea to challenge Champions Liverpool and Manchester City for this season’s Premier League title.

Despite a fourth-place finish last season, the blues have shown they want to do more than they did last season with the statement-signings they have made this summer.

Shearer believes those signings will put them in a three-way fight for the title.

“City is not the only team who will think they are capable of closing the gap on Liverpool,” Shearer wrote in his BBC column.

“Chelsea have spent £200m already, so it is clear what their intentions are. Frank Lampard had a very positive first season in charge given the circumstances, with the club under a transfer embargo, but now they have splashed the cash, the expectation level changes.

“Suddenly his target goes from hoping they can get in the top four, to a demand that they challenge for the title. You don’t spend that sort of money otherwise but, while I am sure they will improve, I still think winning the league will be beyond them.”

Chelsea have signed Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner, Malang Sarr, Thiago Silva, Ben Chilwell and Kai Havertz with Rennes’ goalkeeper Édouard Mendy days away from joining Frank Lampard’s team.
