Former Scotland International and TalkSport pundit Ally McCoist has backed Chelsea to finish closer to Liverpool and Manchester City at the top of the table by the end of the season.

McCoist believes Chelsea are making statement signings which will push them closer to the top two in the Premier League next season.

“The signing they have made is a statement, a proper statement,” he told TalkSport.

“We mentioned the goalkeeper situation, I think Frank (Lampard) will probably have to address that but Havertz is a player you and I spoke about before, I am impressed with him.

“He reminds me a little bit about Ballack. I have seen him a couple of times, I saw him at Ibrox when Leverkusen played against Rangers.

“He just looks a different league. He is one of those players that standout in the middle of the pack, gets himself forward.

“He, I think will be a tremendous signing. Obviously, the Chilwell one has been going on for a while and they look to strengthen in that department.

“I think Lampard had a very very good season but now he’s getting the opportunity to bring the players that he wants to the club and it will be really fascinating to see how they do next year.

“I will fully expect them to certainly be a lot closer to Liverpool and Manchester City at the top of the table.”

Chelsea have completed the signing of Hakim Ziyech, Timo Werner and Xavier Mbuyamba, with Thiago Silva, Kai Havertz and Ben Chilwell set to arrive later in the week.
