Chelsea have confirmed the signing of central defender Malang Sarr on a free transfer.

The 21-year-old left Ligue 1 club Nice this summer upon the expiry of his contract and has now signed a 5-year contract with the Blues.

Sarr was reportedly attracting interest from a whole host of European clubs including Bayer Leverkusen, Schalke, Torino, Atalanta, Fiorentina and Arsenal, but Chelsea have won the battle for his signature.

The club have confirmed that Sarr will go out on loan for the upcoming season to gain some more game time and experience, with several Bundesliga clubs having reportedly made requests to sign him.

On signing the Frenchman, club director Marina Granovskaia said: “The opportunity to sign Malang was one we could not miss. He is a tremendous prospect and we will be monitoring him closely during his loan period, hoping he will soon be back at Chelsea. We are very happy to welcome him to the club today.”

Despite his young age, Sarr has already made an impressive 119 first-team appearances in his career and has some European experience as well.

He primarily plays as a left-sided centre-back but can also play at left-back, and is certainly one to look out for in the future.
