Football journalist and transfer expert Fabrizio Romano has revealed that Chelsea are planning to bring in a new centre-back in the next summer window.

Although Thiago Silva has provided a quick fix to Chelsea’s defensive issues from last season, at 36-years-old, he certainly won’t be the long-term solution and – according to Fabrizio Romano – could be replaced by Atletico Madrid’s Jose Gimenez in the future.

“Yes, I’m sure that next summer Chelsea will go for a centre-back,” Romano said on an interview for The Blue View Podcast.

“I don’t know what kind of level, it will depend also on the opportunities of the window. I can’t say I’m sure what’s happening this summer in this moment, but I will say that for sure they are scouting different centre-backs.

“[Jose] Gimenez is one of the most appreciated but not just from Chelsea, also Manchester City will try to sign him. Currently he has a release clause so it’s really complicated to pay €120m immediately because release clauses with Atletico Madrid need to be paid immediately, not in 3 or 4 years.

“So it’s really difficult to sign these kinds of players but for sure he is appreciated, so let’s see if Chelsea decide to spend a lot of money on a centre-back.

“It will be a plan but we will see because we are just in November. Now it’s up, obviously, to the board, to Frank and let’s see what will happen during the season. Also because, as you know, Thiago Silva is not so young right now so it’s normal to plan for the future.”
