Chelsea and France forward Olivier Giroud has sent a strong reminder to the manager, Frank Lampard, of his importance after his man of the match performance against Sevilla in the Champions League.

The France forward who was making only his third appearance of the season in the Champions League scored all four goals as Chelsea secured top spot in Group E following a 4-0 win away to Sevilla.

Giroud, who is behind Tammy Abraham and summer recruit Timo Werner in the striker position, is looking to earn the starting role when the team sheets are announced for the Premier League match against Leeds United. His performance against Sevilla came as a timely reminder of his value to Frank Lampard and Chelsea.

Speaking after the Sevilla game to BT Sport, Giroud played down his current lack of minutes in the Premier League this season. He said, “Just let me enjoy the night, then we will rest and we will see the gaffer’s plan.”

Olivier Giroud may have succeeded in putting himself in a good position to start on Saturday, but in my opinion, Lampard should go with either Tammy Abraham or Timo Werner upfront. With the way the team is playing and the manner in which our opponents Leeds United like to press high up the pitch, having a fast and mobile attack will equip us better to hit them on the counter.
