Are there areas in which we can still improve? And what are the expectations for the season?
Frank Lampard’s Blues are in some electric form at the moment. We are one of the teams to watch in Europe this season as we are unbeaten in sixteen games. During this period, we’ve have scored thirty seven goals and conceded just ten, keeping ten clean sheets in the process. So it’s safe to say that our current form is nothing short of extraordinary.
But some may still argue that we haven’t done particularly well against the traditional top six in the Premier League. We are still yet to open our account in the scoring department against these sides.
However, the improvement from last season is clearly evident. The matches that we were losing last season against the likes of Sheffield United, Newcastle and Manchester United, we have gained points against this time around. The most glaring improvement this season has been our defense.
We brought in reinforcements for our squad in plenty this summer transfer window, but our defensive signings raised a lot of eyebrows. We went in for a 36-year-old Thiago Silva, a relatively unknown goalkeeper in Edouard Mendy and Ben Chillwell. But the manner in which these three signings have been integrated into the squad has been influential to our great form. After the meltdown at the back last season, this defensive solidity was need of the hour. We also have a relatively stable backline for the first time since last season. And add to that the resurgence of Kante in the lone DM role. He has been a literal mop in front of the defense this season- clearing out any danger that appears.
We have been great offensively too, with goals coming in from all over the pitch. Gone are the days of over reliance on a single player. We now have a plethora of options for creativity on the pitch.
But the first question that comes to our mind is– Is this form sustainable?
This form is well and truly sustainable as long as our major assets don’t face a long term injury. We have incredible depth in almost all the positions; depth which is comparable to the likes of Man City. However, we are quite thin in the goalkeeper spot and in the DM position. One injury to Mendy and Kante and we are in for some trouble.
And that brings us to our second question- What are improvements that are still needed?
On the pitch no real improvement is needed other than continuing the good work that has been going in the training ground. But in the January transfer window we need to get a backup DM. All signs point to West Ham’s Declan Rice, but we must explore other options should we fail to land the young English midfielder. The club could even choose to recall Ethan Ampadu back from his loan.
We can confidently say that this form is no fluke and that this team has been gelling so well in such a short span of time, it is surreal. We can expect great things from this squad in the games to come. So Blues, stay on your toes as times are exciting for a Chelsea fan at the moment!
