Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has backed Chelsea to close the gap at the top of the table this season.

Liverpool (19/20 champions) finished last season with 33 ahead of Chelsea in fourth but the former Dortmund boss expects the blues to close the gap this season.

“I don’t expect a points gap between us and other teams or stuff like that,” Klopp said.

“It is 100 per cent clear that they will close gaps. It is not important what I think about it but Chelsea’s transfers show their own ambitions.

“They were fourth last year, so where do you want to go from there? There are not a lot of directions that are nice – only one.

“And that is what Chelsea want to do 100 per cent. They trust Frank and rightly so, he did an exceptional job, and now they brought the players together. But that is all.”

Chelsea will face Liverpool in the second round of the Premier League at Stamford Bridge this afternoon.
