Chelsea manager Frank Lampard is hoping new signing Thiago Silva brings much-needed leadership to Chelsea’s defence.

Lampard bemused lack to leadership among his defenders last season and hopes the former PSG star will be like a John Terry figure for Chelsea this season.

“Leaders like John Terry are not very common,” he told BBC’s Friday Football Special, as quoted by West London Sport.

“It probably was something we missed – a vocal presence at the back.

“When you have a quiet team who don’t want to talk it is very hard sometimes.

“We work on it but I hope Thiago will bring it naturally. He has generally been captain of the team he has played in and had a lot of success.

“When I watched him in the run up to the Champions League final he looked fit, he looked hungry and the conversations that I have had with him have been the same.”

Thiago Silva will start training with the rest of the team today but is likely to miss Chelsea’s season opener against Brighton on Monday.
