Former Chelsea star and ESPN pundit Frank Leboeuf has backed Chelsea target Édouard Mendy to become Chelsea’s number one goalkeeper once he completes his move to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea and Rennes have reportedly reached an agreement for his transfer with medical set to be completed today.

Leboeuf expects him to be the club’s number one goalkeeper ahead of Kepa Arrizabalaga and Willy Caballero.

“Well, comparing what we see from Kepa, and Kepa is doing what he does best – mistakes – yes Mendy is far much better than that,” Leboeuf said on ESPN FC, as quoted by Express.

“He had a very good season in Reims, signed for Rennes and had a very good season for Rennes.

“So I am very confident that he can do the job and much better than Kepa and even much better than [Willy] Caballero.

“So I don’t know if there is another goalkeeper who Chelsea could find but for that amount of money, yeah it’s kind of a bargain to have Mendy.

He’s a tall goalkeeper, very agile and I’m sure he’s going to do the job. But Kepa cannot do the job anymore. It’s over.”

According to RMC, Chelsea will pay Rennes €24m + €6m in bonuses for the Senegalese goalkeeper who is set to complete his medical examination in Berlin today due to covid regulations in England.
