According to journalist Simon Johnson, Chelsea are set to ignore any incoming transfer or loan request for Callum Hudson-Odoi when the transfer window opens next month. This marks another chapter in the long-drawn transfer saga of the young winger, which has taken many twists and turns along the way.

About two years ago the hype around Callum Hudson-Odoi was at its peak. With Maurizio Sarri at the helm, the English youngster was constantly knocking on the door to get some first-team minutes.

As the other older wingers (bar Hazard) were continuously under-performing, the team was crying out for a bright spark. Odoi had already garnered some minutes in the Europa League that season and was tearing that tournament to shreds.

But minutes were hard to come by in the Premier League. Fans and the media kept mounting pressure on Sarri to play the wonder kid. And in the midst of the mess, there came a £30 million bid from German giants Bayern Munich.

There were rumours that Callum had handed in a transfer request. The pressure was reaching the tipping point, so Sarri had to play him and boy did he play. But all the drama came to an anti-climactic end with the youngster suffering an Achilles injury against Burnley, an injury which is affecting him to this day.

Last season was spent on recuperation and getting back to match fitness, due to which minutes were hard to come by. And as Lampard started his squad overhaul in the summer, bringing in world-class talents in every position, questions were asked about Odoi’s future at the club. Rumours were around that Bayern Munich came in for him again. But he stayed put in West London for the time being.

As the current season has progressed, Hudson-Odoi has found minutes hard to come by amidst all the competition around. Despite this, the 20-year-old has impacted the games in which he has appeared in a very positive way. He has played a total of 422 minutes in all competitions and has scored three goals in the process. But the youngster needs more minutes to progress.

Sources via the Athletic claim that Chelsea are adamant that they do not want to let Hudson-Odoi go because he still is a player of immense potential, and his departure would leave us with lack of options to play out wide.

Only time will tell how this saga plays out.
