Chelsea are reportedly close to finalising a £50m deal to sign Leicester City’s Ben Chilwell, with the transfer expected to be completed early next week, according to Sky Sports.
It is no secret that the West London side are hoping to bolster their defence by bringing in a new left-back this summer, with Emerson having failed to maintain his impressive run of form from the start of the season and Marcos Alonso seen to be unsuitable for Frank Lampard’s preferred formation.
Ben Chilwell has long been linked with a move, and according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, the Blues are close to agreeing a fee of £45-50m for the player.
Frank Lampard was known to have identified the England international as his first-choice left-back option, amid rumours of interest in the likes of Ajax’s Nicolas Tagliafico and Real Madrid’s Sergio Reguilon, and appears to have landed his man.
Chilwell was sidelined for the Foxes’ final 3 games of last season after suffering a heel injury, and has therefore undergone medical checks in London ahead of the move.
Although it was originally believed that he would miss the start of the forthcoming season as well, it now appears that Chilwell is likely to recover within roughly 3 weeks, meaning that he could well feature in Chelsea’s opening league game away at Brighton on September 14th.
Meanwhile, the Blues have also been linked with a move for current PSG captain Thiago Silva, who will be available as a free agent this window.
The Brazilian is said to be prepared to take a pay cut in order to secure a move to the Premier League and, along with Ben Chilwell, would certainly provide an upgrade to Chelsea’s backline.
