Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger has opened up on why let former Arsenal star Cesc Fabregas joined Chelsea from Barcelona.

Fabregas left Arsenal for Barcelona with Arsenal retaining the first option to sign him back when he decided to leave Barcelona in 2014.

Surprisingly, Wenger turned him down the opportunity to sign him again in 2014.

When asked to explain what happened, the French man said:

“Because it was a general guidance for me to say that ‘if you go out here you don’t come back,” Wenger told The Athletic, as quoted by Tribal Football.

“It was a way to retain the players who sometimes wanted to see if the grass was greener somewhere else.

“I did it for Thierry Henry, Sol Campbell, Jens Lehman but it was different. You know with the young players who left I didn’t like to do it.”

Cesc Fabregas joined Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea in the summer of 2004 and won the Premier League title for the 2014/15 season.
